Chetumal, QR – The Zaragoza canal project is on hold due to a lack of funding. Commander José Ricardo Gómez Meillón said that the marine minister had already withdrawn the hired dredgers due to lack of funds.
The navy chief said the dredgers had completed desludging 1.2 kilometers of the Zaragoza Canal and maneuvers to remove them from that area were completed as of today.
He pointed out that the works now require greater economic resources to start the phase of blasting the rock to reach greater depth in the fairway, however, the continuation of the project in the remaining months of 2022 will be very difficult be.
According to Gómez Meillón, the project has been suspended for the time being and will not resume until finances improve and the state government can make the necessary economic contributions.
He also said that using explosives and extracting the material from the seabed would require environmental permits, which has not yet been done.
He stated that the first stage of the dredging desludging was completed and the delay in resuming the project and progressing to the next stage depended on the available resources, adding that he did not know the amounts needed to continue the dredging project.
