COLUMBUS, Ohio 9WCMH) – The Columbus Crew has loaned midfielder James Igbekeme from Spanish Segunda División club Real Zaragoza for the 2022 season of Major League Soccer.
The crew has an option to exercise a permanent transfer to Igbekeme’s contract after the loan expires in December 2022.
“James is a versatile midfielder and his addition will help strengthen our roster,” said Columbus Crew President and General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko. “He will give us another strong option in midfield and his contributions will be seen on both sides of the ball. We look forward to welcoming James and his family to Columbus and look forward to adding him to our team.”
26-year-old Igbekeme joins the crew after spending the last four seasons with Zaragoza. Since 2018, Igbekeme has appeared in 96 league games, scoring four goals. The midfielder also played eight cup games during his time in Spain.
Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Igbekeme made his professional debut in 2013 with GD Ribeirão, who currently plays in the Portuguese third division. In two seasons with Os RibeirensesIgbekeme appeared in 43 games, scoring two goals.
