Before we look at what aircraft Air Europa has in its fleet in 2022, let’s first take a look at this Spanish airline and see how it came to be.
Air Europa is headquartered in Llucmajor, Mallorca, Spain, with its main operational hub at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD). Air Europa was founded in 1986 as Air España SA.
With its headquarters on the Balearic island of Mallorca, it will come as no surprise to hear that Air Europa initially started with Boeing 737-300 and 757 charter flights to the Spanish holiday destination. Although holiday charters are its bread and butter, Air Europa began to compete with national carrier Iberia and its subsidiaries with regular domestic flights.

Air Europa joined the SkyTeam alliance
In 1991, parent company ILG ran into financial difficulties and began trading, forcing Air Europa to enter into a franchise agreement with the now-defunct Iberia. Globalia Corporación Empresarial SA now owns the airline. In the late 1990s, the airline’s older 737 aircraft were replaced with newer 737-800s. On September 1, 2007, Air Europa joined the SkyTeam alliance, enabling codeshare flights with Air France/KLM, Delta Air Lines and Aeromexico.
On November 4, 2019, the International Airlines Group (IAG), which includes Iberia and British Airways, announced the purchase of Air Europa for €1 billion. IAG wanted to make Madrid a central European hub for flights from South America, and the deal made sense given Air Europa’s South American presence. Once in Madrid, passengers could fly on to other European destinations with Iberia, British Airways or IAG’s other Spanish airline, Vueling. At that point, Air Europa had a fleet of 66 aircraft and had made a profit of 100 million euros in 2018, leading IAG to believe they could recover their initial investment in four years.
All of this was pre-COVID-19, of course, and the downturn caused by the pandemic caused IAG executives to reconsider whether it was a wise move. In January 2021, IAG withdrew its original offer, saying it was still willing to buy Air Europa for half the money previously offered. Air Europa did not accept the new terms and today remains a privately owned Spanish airline.
