Edwardsville, Illinois (Saturday, June 25, 2022) – Real monarchs (0-11-2, 2 points) remained scoreless at St. Louis City 2 (9-2-2, 30 points) and suffered a 2-0 loss at Ralph Korte Stadium.
In the second-ever meeting between the teams, the Real Monarchs started up front and almost scored in the seventh minute when midfielder Tyrone Mondi found a cross on Real Salt Lake homegrown Axel Kei, who headed a shot into the bottom left corner but the goalkeeper was able to parry. In the moments that followed, Kei and defender Aziz Kayondo fired two more shots at the net, but both were blocked by goaltender Michael Creek.
St. Louis City 2 responded immediately and scored in the 10th minute as defender Kwame Awuah met Kyle Hiebert, who fired a low left footed shot into the bottom right corner to take the early lead. St. Louis doubled their tally soon after when midfielder Max Schneider won the ball after a Real Monarchs defensive collapse and found fellow midfielder Akil Watts sitting upstairs in the box. Watts rolled his shot over Monarch goalkeeper Gavin Beavers to the top left corner to extend his lead.
After the half-time break, the Monarchs had an early opportunity in the 51st minute when Mondi passed a ball through to Chris Garcia, but the midfielder’s right footed shot was blocked. Despite several chances to score in the second half, the Real Monarchs failed at the net and ended the game 2-0 in favor of the home team.
