Vivian Delice (Lisi) Shields Roces, 65, from Jacksonville, Florida, passed away on Tuesday, May 18, 2021 after a lengthy illness.
Lisi, the daughter of Robert Benoit Shields and Vivian Mae Robinson Shields, was born and raised in Jacksonville. In 1977 she married Armando. Together they lived in Tallahassee, FL, Zaragoza, Spain, Durham, NC, and then returned to Jacksonville. During Armando’s medical school in Spain, Lisi taught English, worked as a registrar for Troy State University and worked for Boeing Corporation. Lisi was loved by her Spanish friends and was fully integrated into the local culture of Spain.
Upon their return to the United States, Lisi and Armando started their family with their sons Javier, born in Jacksonville, FL, and then Luis, born in Durham, NC. Lisi has been unwavering in her love and support for her children all her life. As an empty nest, Lisi became a real estate agent at Watson Realty in Jacksonville.
Lisi loved to travel and was always ready for new adventures. Lisi was a passionate reader and lover of nature. She enjoyed music, parties, dancing, good food and wine. It was fun to be with Lisi. She loved tennis, hiking, skiing, diving, and bird watching. She bred monarch butterflies to release and maintain a Purple Martin colony (endangered American songbirds) for over twenty years. Two days before her death, she was able to watch one of her most popular “cult” films, Across the Universe, and enjoyed it again.
Unfortunately Lisi was diagnosed with cancer six years ago. First it was breast cancer and then metastatic lung cancer. Lisa didn’t smoke. She was determined and brave in her struggle. As one of her good friends said, âShe was one of the most positive and courageous people I have ever met. She is an inspiration to those with terminal illnesses. âWhen she died to be with God and loved ones, she was surrounded by loving family and friends.
The survivors include her husband Armando, sons Javier (Cortlandt) and Luis from Jacksonville, granddaughter Eleanor Shields Roces from Jacksonville, brother Gene McIlvane (Tony) from Port St. Lucie, sister Julie Shields Gordon (Robert) from Evanston , IL, father-in-law Armando Roces and his wife Ginger from Jacksonville, sisters-in-law Annette from Miami, Georgina from St. Pete Beach, Isa from Santa Fe, NM, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Lisi’s death is preceded by her mother-in-law Georgina Roces Collazo, her parents and her sister Cokey.
Instead of flowers, the family will ask for donations to a charity of their choice.
