DIY fan shares Billy bookshelf with IKEA Hack – and it’s breathtaking

The IKEA Billy bookcase is the go-to place for many book lovers when their paperback collection grows beyond their current book storage ideas. But a do-it-yourselfer has shown how versatile these inexpensive shelves can be by integrating them into a stylish living room display.

The result is a stunning shelf with valuable items that fits perfectly into the rest of the room. It’s the Billy bookcase, but like you’ve never seen it before.

Malcolm from @designsixtynine tells us that when he moved into his new home he knew he wanted a shelf with practical storage ideas for the living room. “Since I was on a tight budget, I knew I had to make or adapt something myself,” he says.

To keep costs down, he decided to use Billy bookcases as a starting point. “I chose two 800mm units and two 400mm units to vary the shelf space,” explains Malcolm.

He used four 600 mm kitchen bridging units for the base units. He also screwed batons into the frame of the wall at the top of the IKEA shelves and the top of the base cabinets to serve as a secure anchor.

“I first repaired the ‘floating’ base cabinets, added a wood worktop, and then attached the BILLY bookcase. They rest on the cabinets, but the weight is borne by the wall mounts, ”adds Malcolm.

He attached the bookcases upside down, and the bottom plinth serves as the area to attach the crown molding to. Malcolm also used thin wooden beads to cover the joints between the bookshelves for a seamless finish.

The last step was to prime it with ZINSSER primer and paint it in a neutral tone to get a cohesive look. This also helps keep the decor pieces in focus.

After finishing all of the DIY, Malcolm carefully curated a stylish display that looks like something Fixing top or Dream home makeover on Netflix. We love the calming palette and gold accents introduced by the picture frames, as well as the mix of textures and materials.

As for IKEA hacks, this is one of the most polished we’ve seen. We recently wrote about the colorful collection of a vintage Pyrex fan – also on Billy bookshelves, this time with OXBERG glass fronts. It really is the IKEA piece that keeps coming back!

We feel incredibly inspired.
